Evans-Prichard - Biography

Edward was born on 21 September 1902 in Seurrey, England. His family was educated and cultural, and Edward showed an early interest in exploring human nature and cultural characteristics. After leaving school, he entered the University of Oxford, where he began to study classical philology.

In 1926, after graduation, Edward Evans-Pritchard went to Nigeria as an assistant in anthropological research. This was the beginning of his long association with the African continent, which became the basis for his scientific research.

During his career, Edward Evans-Pritchard conducted many field studies in various African societies, especially among the peoples of Nigeria. His work among tribune groups such as naru and azango allowed him to develop concepts that became key in social anthropology.

One of his most important books was "Wizcraft, Oracles, and Magic Among the Azande," in which he explored the religious and magical practices of azango. This work became a classic example of structuralism in anthropology and influenced the development of this field.

Edward Evans-Pritchard is considered one of the founders of structuralism in anthropology and made a significant contribution to the development of social anthropology. His emphasis on the analysis of symbols, magic, and religion became key in understanding sociocultural systems and traditions.

One of the most important aspects of Edward Evans-Pritchard's scientific philosophy was cultural relativism. He argued that cultures should be understood and evaluated in their own context, not in terms of their own cultural norms. This understanding became key in shaping research methodology in anthropology and helped overcome ethnological europocentrism.
