Erich was born on June 16, 1937 in Brooklyn, New York to Hungarian immigrants. After graduating from high school, Erich attended Harvard University, where he studied classical literature and languages. At Harvard, he distinguished himself as a bright and talented student and was recognized as one of the best graduates of his year.

After receiving a bachelor's degree, he continued his education at Harvard Business School and later received a Ph.D. in classical literature from Harvard University.
