Gaskell: Voice of Social Justice in the World of Literature

Elizabeth Clipsham is a name associated with 19th century British literature and the voice of social justice. This outstanding writer and philanthropist left an unforgettable mark on the history of literature, creating works that reflected the social and moral problems of their time. In this biography, we present to you the life and work of Elizabeth Gaskell.

Elizabeth was born on 29 September 1810 in a partially ruined house in Chelsea, London. Her childhood was marked by heavy losses, including the death of her mother when Elizabeth was just a year and nine months old. This loss had a profound impact on her later creativity and outlook.

The family was involved with the clergy and Elizabeth was educated at an all-girls school in Knigley, Yorkshire, where her father was a curator. This part of her childhood and teenage years influenced her knowledge and understanding of social issues.

Elizabeth Gaskell began her literary career by publishing articles and short stories in various literary journals. Her talent was noticed, and she began to write novels that were popular in their time and continue to be read today.

One of her more famous novels is "North and South," published in 1855. This novel follows the conflicts between the industrial north of England and the rural south, and the social problems associated with these regions. The main character, Margaret Hale, becomes a symbol of the struggle for social justice and the voice of women in literature.
