Ed was born in New York City, United States, and his early years were challenging. After the death of his mother, he was taken into the custody of his brother and sister. After returning from the army, Ed went to college in New York and received a bachelor's degree in architecture. He worked as an architect and journalist, but always dreamed of becoming a writer.

Under the pseudonym Evan Hunter, Ed McBain began his literary career writing novels and short stories. He was especially known for his series of detective novels about the 87th Precinct of New York City, where police officers worked in a realistic and tough urban environment. The first novel in the series, The Cop Hater, was published in 1956 and immediately became a success.

Ed was a master of creating murders, mysteries and intrigues. His works were distinguished by outstanding intrigue, dexterity of dialogues and a sharp sense of urban life. He also wrote several novels under the pseudonym Richard Marks, including The Seat of the Scornful, which was adapted into a film.
