Doris Kearns was born on January 4, 1943 in Roxbury, a neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts. Her parents maintained her interest in reading and history from childhood. After graduating from high school, Doris attended Wellesley College, where she studied English literature. In college, she first began to write scientific papers that received high marks and attracted the attention of teachers. Her passion for history led her to switch to studying the history of the second half of the 19th century, especially the period of the Civil War and its consequences.

After completing her studies at Wellesley College, Doris Kearns began graduate studies at Harvard, where she continued her research in US history. Her dissertation was devoted to political leader Abraham Lincoln, and she immediately attracted the attention of historians with her depth and original approach to historical facts.

After graduating from graduate school, Doris taught history at Harvard and other universities, where her passion for history and ability to make complex historical events accessible and interesting to students attracted many followers.
