After leaving school, he got a job at the Pinkerton Agency, a private detective organization, where he spent several years. Experience at the agency became important for his future writing career, as he became familiar with many aspects of detective work and the criminal world.
During the First World War, Hammett served in the army, where he received a medal for courage. After demobilization, he returned to work at the Pinkerton Agency.
Dashel began his writing career in the 1920s, publishing his first stories in various magazines. However, real success came to him in the 1930s, when he began writing detective novels. His first novel, The Maltese Falcon, was published in 1930 and instantly became a bestseller.
