Charlotte Perkins Gilman - Biography

Gilman is a name that is associated with the struggle for women's equality, literary genius and authorship of one of the most influential feminist works of the 19th century. Her life and work are of great importance to both American literature and the women's rights movement. Let's take a look at the key points of her biography and her contribution to world culture.

Charlotte Anna Perkins was born July 3, 1860 in Hartford, Connecticut, in the family of the famous theologian Frederick Bailey Perkins and his wife Mary Fitch Weston. She lost her father in early childhood, an event that had a major impact on her life and beliefs.

In 1884, Charlotte Perkins entered Rhode Cliff College in Massachusetts, where she studied literature and art. She also studied painting and traveled to Europe, an important experience for her future career.

Charlotte Perkins began her literary career writing poetry, short stories and essays. However, her real breakthrough was the novel The Yellow Wallpaper, published in 1892. This story, written in the form of a diary, tells about the psychological degradation of a woman subjected to untreated depression and due to a patriarchal society. "Yellow wallpaper" became a symbol of the suppression of women and caused important discussions in the field of psychiatry and feminism.

Her feminist prose and essays, such as "Woman and Economics" and "Woman and Social Evolution" (The Man-Made World), gave voice to women and called for equality and liberation from societal constraints.

Charlotte Perkins was an active feminist and women's rights activist. She believed that women should have equal rights in education, work and politics. She was a member of the American Women's Association and entered political activity in support of women's suffrage.
