Bernard Cornwell's first book was published in 1981 and was called Sharpe's Eagle War. This book introduced readers to Richard Sharpe, the protagonist of a series of historical novels that later became known as "The Sharpe Saga." Richard Sharp is a British Army officer during the Napoleonic Wars. Books about Sharp are hugely popular for their fast-paced storyline, picturesque battle descriptions and charismatic protagonist.

After the success of the Sharp series, Bernard continued to create historical novels, immersing readers in different eras and events. He wrote the series "The Saxon Stories," which tells about the Vikings and the formed English royal dynasty. This series also became popular and was adapted into a popular television series called "The Last Kingdom."
