Anton Pavlovich was born on January 29, 1860 in Taganrog, a small town in southern Russia. He was the third of six children in the family of a poor merchant. The early years were not easy, and the family experienced financial difficulties after the bankruptcy of his father.

His style was noted for simplicity and naturalness, and his analysis of human psychology became his main literary technique.
