Anton was born on 29 January 1860 in Malaya Vishnevka, Russian Empire. He was the third of six children in the family of a poor grocer and his wife. His early years were spent in the countryside, where he witnessed the hard lives of ordinary people and developed his observational sense.

After graduating from school in Taganrog, he entered Moscow University, where he studied medicine. He worked as a physician and continued to write, contributing to journal publications. His literary endeavors began to attract the attention of readers and literary critics.

The very first publication was the short story "On Love" (1880), published in a literary magazine. However, the real breakthrough in his literary career was the play "Ivanov" (1887), which caused rave reviews and attracted attention to his dramatic talent.
