Anna Andreevna Gorenko was born on June 11, 1889 in Bolokhov, a small town in Ukraine, in a family of intellectuals. Later, she chose the pseudonym "Anna Akhmatova," by which she became famous.

Anna began writing poetry in early childhood, and her talent was visible from the first lines. After graduating from high school, she entered the Tsarskoye Selo Literary Institute in St. Petersburg, where she met other future great poets, such as Osip Mandelstam and Nikolai Gumilyov.
