Anise was born on 21 February 1903 in Neuville-sur-Seine in France to Spanish parents. Her childhood was spent in different countries - France, Spain and Cuba, which shaped her worldview and cultural experience. In 1914, the family moved to the United States, where Anis continued her education and began to show interest in literature.

Anis' first poems were published in the 1920s in literary magazines. She also became active in New York literary circles, where she struck up friendships with notable writers and artists, including Henry Miller and John Ensign.

Anis Nin experienced her first literary success with the publication of diaries. Her diaries, from the 1930s to the end of her life, became an important part of her work. In them, she frankly expressed her thoughts, experiences and explored her own personality and sexuality.
