Alan was born on July 22, 1949 in New York, USA. His early childhood was filled with music and his mother was an accomplished pianist and music educator. This musical raid in the family was the foundation for the future success of Menken.

He began studying music and writing songs as a teenager and his talent was incredibly obvious. After graduating from New York University, Alan went in search of his place in the world of music.

Alan began his career on Broadway, where his early work attracted the attention of critics and viewers. One of his early successes was with the musical "Little Shop of Horrors" (1982), which brought him popularity and recognition. Their first big success was the Disney animated film "Maleficent" (1989), in which Menken wrote the music and Ashman the lyrics.

The next major project for this couple was the cartoon "Beauty and the Beast" (1991), which became one of Disney's most famous and beloved animated films. Songs from this film, such as "Beauty and the Beast" and "Be Our Guest," won Oscars and became an integral part of world musical culture.
