After receiving a bachelor's degree in theater arts from Columbia University in 1965, Blythe continued his education at Yale Drama School, where he earned a Master of Arts in acting.

His film career began in the late 1960s, when he starred in several small films, but real success came to him in the 1970s. Some of the more famous films in which Blythe Danner starred are:

• "The Tenenbaum Family" (2001): In this comedy drama, Blythe played the role of the patriarch of the Tenenbaum family.
